Distribution and Habitat

  • Blue Swimming Crabs are strictly marine organisms found throughout the Indo-West Pacific region.
  • They commonly inhabit nearshore marine and estuarine waters. While they thrive in sandy substrate habitats, they may also be found on muddy, algal. and seagrass areas from the intertidal zone to at least 50m depth
  • Generally, smaller crabs are found in shallow waters while adults are found in comparatively deeper waters
  • Juvenile crab individuals are known to frequently enter estuaries and spend their first few months on the intertidal areas, with intertidal flats serving as their foraging area and seagrass beds as refuge.
  • as the crabs grow in size and mature, they move towards deeper areas.

Blue swimming crab is generally classified as scavengers and almost exclusively carnivores, It feeds on decaying organic matter and slow-moving invertebrates such as mollucs, small crustaceans, worms, snails, bivalves and fish larvae. At the earliest life stage. they feed on phytoplankton or small, floating micro algae.
